Hi All,
Some of the objectives of change in name are :
- Make sure the name is similar to our existing name,
so that people still know it as ILUG Kochi and we
do not lose the identity of our name which we have
for the past 11 years.
Changing a name is easy but connecting it with
the old name wherever you go is going to be
tough.
- Make sure that what we have been doing so long is
not considered invalid with a complete name change and
also reiterating the fact that all ILUGs in the world
will probably switch over to Libre User Groups :P.
- Also the point that our mailing list title needs to
changed according to the name, rather than the
name change with the title.
Why I still suggest "Indian Libre User Group"
- Also all other names suggested represent software and we
dont want just computer users to participate in our
group but the entire society focussing on our
freedom in society.
- For bringing in the common man, I think we need
to assosciate it with the social values not the
technology and of course libre is a totally foreign word
for all, but "Linux" (kernel) was also strange to them
several years before. But let us look forward to
gathering strength to be a strong part of this
movement.
- And bringing the common man closer with a social movement
perspective is better than keeping him away with technology.
Besides I do not think we are looking at software alone.
All knowledge should be free and shared.
- Besides the name sounds something different and
exciting and ILUG has itself become common, we will
give it the right interpretation.

Yeah, FSUG is also a good one. It is appropriate and also avoids
confusion
caused by the word "Libre".
