I think Expressway / freeway should come in India also. It may not fully solve the traffic problems in India. But it is good for long distance travels. Basically, freeway connects cities. For example, If my office is in Salem, I cannot go there from Ernakulam and come back daily. But if there is expressway and if I have a car, I can reach there easily. Because I have to take the 4th exit, which is Salem (1. Trissur, 2. Palakkad, 3. Coimbatore, 4. Salem). May be, I can reach there with in 2 hrs. The heavy vehicles can also use expressway instead of using high way. So it will reduce the traffic problem in small roads also. As there are no entry points and exit points between cities, the traffic won't get interfered.
