Here in Cluj there is an Internet Cafe with Kubuntu on the computers. A
lot of launchers are on the desktop: Open Office Writer renamed as "Word",
preferably set to save as Word documents (.doc extension) by default;
Mozilla Firefox and others. I would put launchers for the folders Home,
Documents, Pictures, Computer on the Desktop. I think there would not be a
lot of difference from My Computer, My Documents etc.
I would also put a sheet of important printed instructions on the table
near every computer. For Instant Messenger, instead of Yahoo Messenger for
Linux (which did not work at the Internet Cafe) and Pidgin (which was full
of users and I could not add another user) I would recommend Meebo for the
users www.meebo.com . In order for them to access it I would write a simple
script with the code

firefox www.meebo.com

and name it Messenger.sh and put it on the desktop and then change the
permissions of the file so as to be executable.

In case you install Kubuntu I would recommend a launcher for K3b on the
Desktop and give it a "DVDWriter" name perhaps, users should be able to use
it easily, it is somewhat similar to Nero although there are many
differences. My former boss had no trouble using it although he uses Ubuntu
and used CD/DVD Creator for burning DVDs.
In case you install Ubuntu CD-DVD burning would be an issue for the users,
although CD/DVD Creator is simpler than K3B. I would recommend some
instructions for it.
For watching movies I would recommend VLC Player (many Windows users here
use it, it is widespread in Romania) and MPlayer and to put launchers on the
Desktop and rename them as MoviePlayer or something like this.
I would also recommend starting a movie and then installing the necessary
plugins for totem movie Player, so it could be used as the default movie
player.
I would also recommend installing Flash Player.
Using Skype would be easy, just like under Windows.
The supervisor at that Internet Cafe with Kubuntu on the computers said
they had a lot of customers, students, in the evening. However, I am sure
the supervisor had a lot to work with beginners. It was the case also with
me 6 years ago when I went there for the first time and the OS that they had
on their computers seemed extremely strange to me, so I had to be helped a
bit.

Dear friends,

I am managing a browsing center in my local town. We use windows xp in our
computers. It is more prone to virus attacks and crashes and we have to
format our systems time and again. So, I am planning to install LINUX in all
our computers.

People here can only use the windows environment. So, please advice me for
what flavor of LINUX to use. At the same time it should resemble the windows
environment.
