I have had similar issues before
But I don't think there should be a problem, coz if it works in windows
(as a normal dial-up)
It should work in linux, coz there is no major change etc (security
wise, I mean)

Just play around with the settings and it should be k.
Else let me know, will try to get the settings for you.

I used to use pppd for the same.
By the way, you use bluetooth to connect the fone or cable?
Just to get an idea abt settings
