Warm greetings to the FOSS Community,

The meeting for the month of January 2010 conducted successfully.

There were 13 people who attended the meeting.

Date: 24-01-2010
Time: 2:30pm - 6pm
Venue: Internet Club, IInd Floor, AMI Trust Building,
           Broadway Enclave, Broadway, Ernakulam
Attendees: 13

The meeting started at 2.30pm. As usual the meeting started
with the introduction to Free Software. The meeting discussed
about GNU Movement, Open Source and GNU/Linux. The session
discussed about FOSS licenses GPL, LGPL, BSD License etc.

As one of the attendees pointed out it is the lack of support that prevents
most people to start using Free Software. So the discussion moved in that way.
It is necessary to give FOSS awareness to our neighbours/friends so that in case
if we need any help we can seek their help and they can seek our help. If they
are not able to fix their issue by themselves they should be able to contact
the local Free Software user group or ask help using online facilities such as
mailing lists and IRC.

We all that know Free Software is a social movement. At the same time
it has some
economic aspects. Most of the computer users/companies have chosen
FOSS for reducing
their software expense and also to avoid facing legal issues for using
proprietary software
illegally. So it is necessary to promote FOSS on economic grounds
without compromising the
social aspects of FOSS. We should be able to find out the potential of
FOSS solutions.

There was small tea break in between the meeting. The attendees used
this time to
interact each other to share their experience in FOSS with the beginners.

After the tea break the meeting moved on to a session on GIS. Rishad
who is doing, GIS
(Geographical Information System) projects, demonstrated one of the
projects he has done
using FOSS based tools. He also gave a talk on GIS and told how FOSS
based GIS would
benefit the government in collecting geographical information of a
particular region. It would
be easy for the government to collect the information such as roads,
pipelines, natural resources
etc. of a particular area, he continued. Since it is based on Free
Software the government will be
free from all economic and legal bounds in using such a system having
huge volumes of data.

It was the time to wind up the meeting. The meeting wound up at 6pm.

We thank all the attendees for making this meeting a successful
event.

And hope the next meeting is bigger and better.

Please send your feedback to this thread as it is necessary to improve
future ILUG meetings.

As you all know ILUG Cochin is a voluntary organization in which the
meetings and different public
activities like conducting seminars, maintaining website etc are done
by volunteers. We hope more people
will come forward to volunteer these activities. We also have
technical session in every monthly meeting. Those
who are interested in taking a technical/non-technical session on Free
and Open Source Software please
feel free to come forward.

Happy Hacking.

Thanks and regards,
Sreenadh
