The BSNL modem can connect to Internet in two modes; ethernet and bridge mode. In the first mode, the network authentication is done in the modem itself. So you just have to turn on the modem to connect to the internet. In the second mode, you/the computer supplies the authentication information (user-name and password). For this mode, you can use the network manager and configure a DSL connection.
Then after you have done that, you can use the Synaptic Package Manager to install software packages...
