GUI Programming in Linux ( using GCC )
---------------------------------------------------------------
X Window System originated at MIT in 1984. The defacto Library for
programming X is XLib.
Due to nature of the library (it's protocol implementation) , it is a
fine grained API and is difficult
to build today's GUI. Enter Qt, GTK+/GDK and WxWidgets ( all are using
XLib in Linux for GUI
rendering ) for easing the programming burden. GTK+ Library was build
for the GIMP and is the
underlying library behind the GNOME desktop. The Qt (from Nokia [
after Trolltech acquisition ] )
Library is used by the KDE. WxWidgets is one of the most popular GUI
programming library in the
world.
The topics to be covered include
a) GUI programming with Xlib (C )
b) GUI programming with GTK+/GDK (C)
c) GUI programming with Qt (C++)
d) GUI programming with WxWidgets (C++)
The emphasis will be on how you can use GCC to compile and build
applications. Tools like make
and qmake (for qt ) and wx-config (shell script ) will be used for the demo.
