Well guys, i was also working in IMAGE Multimedia as centre manager. They are
an
MNC focusing on Animation training with their own Animation Studio at chennai.
Well, they once had a plan switch the syllabus completely to GNU/Linux after i
showed their R&D head Kubuntu. They were impressed a lot and even once called
me
to send replacement apps list for Adobe Suite. But unfortunately due to the
inferior quality of many of the replacement apps, they dropped the plan. But in
this process, i discovered that Autodesk Maya which is a very popular animation
tool; is also available in GNU/Linux (Although not under GPL). And as mentioned
earlier, almost all Latest animation movies are made in GNU/Linux. Not just the
rendering, but the animation part also. These are the reasons why they are
opting for it..
1) Free (As in freedom as well as beer, both matter to them)
2) Stability
3) Undoubtedly the most "Renderfarm friendly" OS out there. Well, i hope u all
know what renderfarms are. Its like a series of computers connected together to
act like a giant super computer. Renderfarms are in use in Hollywood for the
past 10 or so years :). But most of them dint know that it was our baby that
was
running the show ;).
Blender is also becoming very popular in Hollywood. But for
amatuers, its said that its still a bit complicated. Professionals love it bcoz
they can literally do whatever they want... :D. And i am GUESSING that probably
some studios are using customized versions of Blender in their studios (the
details of which will be hidden, as its their business secret). I am seeing a
bright future for GNU/Linux in Multimedia. I have been sort of like
specializing
in Multimedia for the past many years, owing to which i have been able to
convince a good number of home users to switch to GNU/Linux; since the majority
home user's needs are entertainment and multimedia related :)... Anyways, happy
to see that so many people are interested in this topic rather than just Coding
and stuff. I personally believe that its multimedia that is going to give
GNU/Linux its well deserved "Hit" amongst home users soon...which will pave the
way for whole new markets for gaming industry and other industries in GNU/Linux
:)...
With warm regards,
S.Sreekanth
