To add to Thomas's points, the idea is not about venue. When we are doing something, if a few more people are getting interested or if we are able to create interest is that bad ?
In the budget announcement FM minister talks about giving out laptops to students. What computing platform is about to be given and who is there to mentor and help ? Now for the venue, I don't agree that the group survived because of the venue but its because of the community and freedom. I never attended a single meeting but I am in the list for more than a decade for now. In between I was not in the list or my e-mail changed or something but the moment I saw ilug, I joined again. The need us to spread awareness is very important as students, especially engineering students are loosing problem solving skills, ability to pick up new things etc. If it was not for FSF & the enthusiasts all around me during college days, I could have been a totally different person, I am sure I am a better person because of my interaction with the community and today, no mattter whatever we say, now we are loosing the "hacker culture" to other things. I was not aware that the meetings should be happening in only one place. Apologize if I break any rules by suggesting alternate venues.
