Hi All,
My
name is Joseph John. I have been using Linux and Open Source for quite
long time.  Do not have much expertise in programming, but familiar with
programming languages. I have implemented  enterprise solution based on
open source in all most all the fields except ERP, Business Process,
Business Intelligence . Some of the areas which has been successfully
implemented are VPN, Content Filtering, PDC, Network monitoring, CCTV,
IP-PBX, Document Management,Portal Solution, etc .....

Like to share some of my experience, feedback  aboiut workshop venue selection
and what I feel about an
ecosystem in which Open Source can be promoted.

What
I observed is that when I start trying to find a solution I do find
great obstacle in terms of domain knowledge and setup knowledge, my
persistence and with the help of the forums I had found a way to
implement such solutions. This procedure made me ponder on sharing my
experience and knowledge to others in installation and configuration of
such product. I started documenting my steps and started conducting the
wrkshops.  This  I am doing to build up confidence on IT solution
providers, budding IT support professionals, Organization  to use open
source for enterprise solutions and I am quite successful in doing so.
In this procedure  I have mentored individuals and small organizations
to adapt open source use for enterprise solution. I have lost count on
the no of people I have mentored so far.

All
 my workshop and training
are free from commercial advantage, I politely decline any
reimbursement of any  expense. I don't keep  any commercial aim in my
workshop because I have a job, and I am happy with what I get as salary
and content with it.  In future, in case if I do not have a job or
another source of income I will be conducting the same workshop and
seminar for a fee. It is how the eco system works. I am not taking it
now  because I do not want it, not because of any  thought or policy
that I should not benefit commercially through my workshop.

What I want to point out here is that there is nothing wrong in getting
commercial benefit for your contribution and hard work.

For
eg:- members in the mailing list  might have joined Jay's LINUX academy
for training. Good training they give, my nephew has been trained
there. He joined there after
clearing is RHCE. In a way he made is concept clear only because he
joined there for training, similarly lot many others. So what is wrong
in this, nothing. Both the people benefited.  Jays Linux academy  got
students and students got expertise. Here every one wins, Jay's LINUX
academy got  direct and indirect exposure and advertisement through
Jay's Internet Club activities, no one can deny this and no one can say
wrong about this. It is a part of eco system where students gets good
training and the academy gets advertisement.  Love to see lots of places
like  JaysLinux Acadamy /Internet club in Kochi for the benefit of
Linux and Open Source

For
me to conduct or even attend an event in broad way is difficult because
of the traffic, chaos .  And my previous experience in Jay
Academy(Internet Club) is that it does not have facilities which needed.
 My workshop are interactive,
participants should have a PC or laptop in which they can install
configure the solutions discussed.  I do believe I have the freedom to
choose workshop venue keeping following points (a) transportation, (b)
parking, (c) seating  capacity. This way only the parameter I selected
in choosing the venue.  I strongly felt my workshop will be better if I
get a better place than broad way venue so  I chose a better venue. This
is  based on freedom to choose

My
mails to the mailing list has been blocked, It did not had any message
against open source. They blocked workshop mails as well as other mail
asking for a discussion on why we cannot bring new linux users to the
mailing list. My mail was trying to find reason why in our mailing list
we do have a very small fraction of Linux users of Kochi.  Mailing  list
 (http://www.ilug-cochin.org/)  policy is  absurd,
monopoly, with not good intention . It is not doing any good for the
community development. It is alienating active members. Just because the
moderator did not like the workshop venue He choose to block all my
email for the workshop to the list.

This
mail I am sending it to http://www.ilug-cochin.org/ and to
[email protected] . Hope the ilug-cochin moderators and office
bears come to understand thier mistakes and mend.

Thanks
Joseph John
