Hari,

Just like in the case of the accounting company, you can attempt to run the
software on GNU/Linux versions. Sometime back there was a discussion in
this community about porting Win libraries to GNU/Linux so that software
which are not supported Wine ( http://www.winehq.org/ ) can be supported.

I think a good starting point could be trying out with
http://www.playonlinux.com/en/ & then if the application is not supported,
look for Wine directly supporting it. I am hoping one of this should work.

If still issues are pending, we can look into the issues are perhaps take
it up as an academic project - ie by students. I can help with finding the
students and mentoring in whatever way I can contribute. If the community
is ready to support & above all if you can guide the students with the
requirements etc, we can make it a reality.

PS: I am not a big fan of Tally. Its a medicore software compared to other
preparatory alternatives like various quickbook versions, SAGE, Xero etc
but they have managed to force the end users to use Tally by pushing it via
Charted accountants. If someone is struggling so much to run Tally on
other platforms, he/she might have first looked into other alternatives out
there. (I feel bit better as I could I shed my frustration of being forced
to use Tally as Govt departments, CA everyone just wants this substandard
tool & to manage accounts, we need to use proper tools making us spend
double the amount than what it is required.)
