I lied: EHLO reports that XVERP is an optional command, and indeed MAIL FROM: <from-addr> XVERP is legal and generates a VERPed address. Hmm. Maybe this SMTP extension is already "defined". Sure looks like one could hack SMTPDirect.py to use it.
