Hmm, that's a good point.  The reasoning behind the behavior is much more 
apparant now.  I wasn't thinking of one notice being sent for multiple list 
memberships.

Since this seems to be something more of a problem to our particular setup, 
I'll work on a custom solution (such as using an informative autoresponse).
