I would think that having some way of plugging this in would be better than hard-coding it, as new solutions come along all the time.
Recaptcha is good as far as traditional captchas go, but while we're voting, I'll vote for Text Captcha (www.textcaptcha.com) for obvious reasons. Though one available in multiple languages would be a good idea of course.
And it goes without saying that this only would make a difference for web-based subscription, it wouldn't make any difference for Email subscription requests unless you wanted to plug something like Text Captcha into the confirmation process, which would be rather novel at least.
