Start by upgrading to Python 2.1.3.  I'm not sure that's your problem,
but I just tested it with that version and it worked for me:

Python 2.1.3 (#1, Sep 20 2002, 16:00:46) 
[GCC 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-112)] on linux2
Type "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
