I've not had trouble sending mail, but if you think the MTU is your problem, you should start by setting the MTU on all machines to 1492 if your ISP uses PPPoE. If that doesn't help, or you want to do more detailed diagnostics, head over to broadbandreports.com and use their tweak test to check your Windows machines. Make sure that if you do change the MTU than you set the MTU to the same value on every machine on your network.
