Simon described the situation very well. I thought I would add one note, which may or may not affect you.
When forwarding one email address to another for Mailman, under some circumstances you have to worry about the "implicit address" problem. As I understand it, this is when the real address of the list isn't in the To: or CC:
This has happened when I moved a list from one machine to another and simply forwarded all mail to the new address.
The answer, in this case, is to go to the Privacy -> Recipient Filters section and add alternate email addresses users may send to to the list of aliases.
