It looks to have been a corrupted incoming message in the /var/lib/mailman/qfile/in directory. I could not have fixed this without Jon's expert knowledge.
Did you file a bug on this? A corrupted incoming message should not take down the whole mailing list system. Mailman should recognize it as bad and shunt it out of the way, preferably notifying the admin in the process.
