Mailman doesn't have its own SMTP. It is independent of the MTA (mail transfer agent) on the machine, and requires that there be one.
2. If Mailman relies on an SMTP server package independent of Mailman, is that SMTP server required to reside on the same machine?
It can be configured to use an MTA that is not on the same host as Mailman.
