I would like to setup a mail list that is threaded like a news group.
That feature is already provided in the standard "pipermail" archiver which is included with Mailman.
Does mailman provide an nntp server or do I need to 'connect' to some other program?
No, Mailman does not provide an NNTP server. However, you can configure it to gateway a mailing list to a newsgroup via an NNTP server you specify, either one-way or bi-directional.
