I do have that setting. doesn't seem to make a difference. I don't think postfix refusing e-mail to the list is related to that, but I may be wrong. I'm not even sure what doesn't it like, since portmap can resolve that address.

Try setting DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST to the full hostname of your machine instead of 'localhost'. This fixed the low level smtp errors for my setup a few weeks ago. You can set this option in Mailman/Defaults.py
