They both use the same method -- one envelope sender address, 1000 envelope recipient addresses, then the body of the message.


The only additional performance hit would be the added delay in your sending a message from you to the mailing list and then it sending that message out, as opposed to you sending the message directly.


Of course, most MTAs won't accept 1000 recipients, so Mailman would work a lot better in this respect because it would slice up the list of recipients into chunks that are more likely to be accepted by the MTA.
