basically it all came down to the symbolic link i was putting in /etc/smrsh but failing to include in my /etc/aliases file. so it looks like you were right all along brad. /etc/aliases was trying to run "mailman" which couldn't find my lists because the smrsh link was named mailman-<domain>.

all i can say is running multiple copies of mailman on a single machine is dangerous business. it may satisfy the aesthetic of being able to have <list.domain.tld> but i'm not sure it was worth the effort of the past 5 days.
