You need alias_maps to tell postfix to use
/var/lib/mailman/data/aliases (and /var/lib/mailman/data/aliases.db).

See <http://www.list.org/mailman-install/node13.html> and
<http://www.list.org/mailman-install/postfix-virtual.html>. You need
virtual_maps with virtual domains. You need alias_maps in any case.

The former admin's configuration was probably what you need. If you
really think there is a better way, this is a Postfix issue and would
better be addressed on a Postfix list.
