I suspect you are correct in this. It depends on what SMTPDirect sees in the return from the SMTP transaction, but the smtp-failure log messages seem to say it just sees the connection loss. You could try setting VERP_DELIVERY_INTERVAL = 1 in mm_cfg.py.
