Are the archives (archives/private/<listname>/*) there? Since you get a 404, I'm asuming this is a public archive so is there a symlink archives/public/<listname> to archives/private/<listname>. Is the archives/private directory either 'world searchable' (o+x) or owned by the web server (see the warning box at <http://www.list.org/mailman-install/node9.html>)? Does your web server have the appropriate 'pipermail' alias, and can the web server follow symlinks from the archives/public directory (see <http://www.list.org/mailman-install/node10.html>)?
