It is somewhat complicated, but the bottom line is it will work the way you expect if you set VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW = Off in mm_cfg.py. In a Mailman virtual host environment (the default), the host name that is plugged into DEFAULT_URL_PATTERN is in some cases obtained from the host portion of the URL that invoked the CGI. This clearly doesn't work if DEFAULT_URL_PATTERN has more than just %s in the host portion.
