This has nothing to do with Mailman per se. This is an issue with the incoming MTA that receives the mail for delivery to mailman. There are three possibilities that I see. The first possibility is that list creation requires a manual 'alias' installation by the host and they have not done that, and the problem has nothing to do with the '.', but rather is due to this being a new list and the mail delivery aliases for it not being installed. The second possibility is that they have some automated way of installing aliases or recognizing list names which is confused by the '.'.
