In particular, see the "Sender field" thread at <http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-developers/2006-April/thread.html>. The fear is that older/broken MTAs and perhaps autoresponders will return bounces/autoresponses to the Sender: rather than the envelope sender (or From: in the case of autoresponders), thus breaking bounce processing from those MTAs and possibly posting bounces/autoresponses to the list.
