add_language('en', _('English (USA)'), 'iso-8859-1')
del _

as I had found this in some mailing list archive. This does not seem
to work. Neither does this:
add_language('en', 'English (USA)', 'iso-8859-15', 'ltr')
Which I also tried.
Still stumped.
