All of a sudden I'm consistently getting errors like this from gsmtp
when I try to send mail:
S: 421 4.7.0 Temporary System Problem. Try again later (SF).
d51sm122311yho.14 - gsmtp
Error: Unexpected return code 421 (expected 250):
"4.7.0 Temporary System Problem. Try again later (SF).
d51sm122311yho.14 - gsmtp".
...where the "d51sm122311yho.14" part is different for every failure,
but the rest is the same. I quit and relaunched MailMate Version
1.5.4 (3371), which has been sending mail just fine since I installed
it; no change after relaunch.
Anyone else seeing this sort of thing, or know what might be
causing it? The messages are plain-text replies to what are probably
HTML mails without any attachments.

Any clues as to why I might have two utterly different mail
services suddenly fail to accept outbound mail, apparently
simultaneously? I have rebooted my MBP, to no avail.

and
refuses to send the message. MailMate could (but doesn't)
automatically
try later, but I'm not sure that would be a better solution. To be
clear, MailMate cannot send the message when the server refuses to do
so. Based on the above Gmail is the problem. I kind of doubt it, but
there might be more interesting information if you send me the entire
log (off list).

Yes, that does look like it's for a different reason. No connection is
made at all. Are you on a very slow connection?
Again, you can try to send me the entire log offline although in this
case you might already have provided all there is. You can also try
manually connecting to the server like this in the Terminal:
telnet server.example.com 25
telnet server.example.com 587
A successful attempt look like this (my server):
Connected to mail.freron.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 freron.com ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu)
quit
221 2.0.0 Bye
Connection closed by foreign host.
I wrote `quit` above.

about it by now.

No, it turns out (as I just found) that the provider had changed
the outbound mail server's address in a hardware upgrade and didn't
bother to let me know. Grrrr. But at least that one's solved, since
it works fine now.

FWIW I am seeing the exact same message with my google apps domains -
sounds like an issue with google servers to me...

The web-interface most likely does not need to access SMTP like
MailMate
does.
Usually IMAP and SMTP are also completely separate systems. This is
not
quite true in the case of Gmail, but I consider that a bug on their
part.
And it seems like it must just be me, because if GMail weren't
accepting outbound mail in general, we'd
have heard about it by now.
During the night I now have this report form 3 users. I am going to
assume this is somehow related to MailMate (despite the error message
from the server). I'll move the discussion of this particular subject

Update: The problem is still unresolved. Anyone with the same problem

welcome to join the discussion. More data points might help resolve
the
issue.

Also note that you can configure the Gmail account in MailMate to send
using a different SMTP if you have access to one. Otherwise you may be
able to run postfix on your own machine (I describe this in the
ticket,
but apparently it did not work for at least one other user).
