They were certainly put there by Postbox when in the office today.

When Postbox moves a message then it actually copies it and marks the original for deletion (this is how IMAP works). The problem is that Postbox might not commit the deletion until later, e.g., when changing the currently selected mailbox (the exact behavior varies between email clients). The commit is known as EXPUNGE in IMAP language.

For the record, MailMate expunges immediately after marking a message as deleted. MailMate is also very careful not to expunge messages marked as deleted by other email clients. Most of the time though, it should be safe to delete messages with a red dot.
