I use Fastmail.fm too and have done so with MailMate for a long time.
I have a lot of messages up there. I have never seen the error you're
reporting, even when moving thousands of messages or doing mass
deletions.
Turns out it is a MailMate bug triggered by the import of an account
from Apple Mail. Kind of 2 bugs: MailMate puts too much trust into the
imported account details and MailMate keeps on trying to create a
mailbox that is not allowed to exist on the server. The worst bug is of
course the latter one.
