Thanks to all who suggested text editors and small applications to do
Markdown in MailMate. I tried several of each type, including BBEdit,
Textmate, and Multimarkdown Composer, Erato.
After all that, I investigated Brett Terpstra's suite of services to
facilitate Markdown DIRECTLY in MailMate
(http://brettterpstra.com/projects/markdown-service-tools/). I am now
using simple keyboard commands for **boldface**, _italics_, and numbered
and bullet lists, and brackets to produce active email links--e.g.,
<[email protected]>.
The price was excellent, namely, it is FREE (though I might make a
contribution on Terpstra's website to express my gratitude).
Together with Devon Technologies' free WordService
(http://www.devontechnologies.com/download/products.html ), this gives
me considerable keyboard shortcut help for often-used services. Not
having to shift **from** MailMate **to** another program and **back
again** makes life much simpler.
For the record, the text editor that seemed most user friendly to me,
right out of the box, was TextMate. It is very well done, but given that
I already use TeXShop for LaTeX and PageSpinner for HTML, it did not
make sense for me to go that route. I simply have no current need for a
powerful text editor. Thanks again to those who made suggestions.
