The universal Drafts mailbox shows drafts in the mailboxes assigned with
“Drafts” as mailbox type. I assume the email was not in the correct
mailbox.

I understand, and please correct me if I am wrong Benny: you should
go to SOURCES and update the 'Mailbox Type' option in the menu to
correct the problem.
That sounds fine.
Also verify that the 'deleted' mailbox (in SOURCES ), has also been
emptied.
If it's the correct mailbox for trash then I believe Gmail also
automatically deletes it after a month or so.
