It's not less customizable, but it's more tricky to do in practice:
I could even imagine that one could have an arbitrary number of lines per message, and one could have an arbitrary number of columns per line, with span.
When I do look into this some day then the plan was to see if it is possible, technically and performance-wise, to do it using an HTML view for each message.
