Initially, this can be the case since MailMate caches the entire mailbox contents locally. This makes it a lot more responsive when working with old mail and absolute dynamite with searches and the use of virtual folders with interesting display criteria.
I initially left MailMate syncing for at least an hour before I actually started using it.
