No, it is based on your Sent Messages folder. You can remove/move sent
messages to change the behavior of MailMate.
MailMate works correctly for me even though my Sent folder is always
empty. For example, messages I send to this list are always
automatically sent from mailmate@[my domain] instead of my more general
e-mail address. That's always mystified me, even as it pleases me!
