So, I found out how to trigger this. All I have to do is not notice that
markup language "markdown" was selected, and put *asterisks* around a
thing.
So apparently what actually caused some of the strangeness is that
markdown was turned on-by-default in the recent patch, maybe? And that
means that if I send markdown, suddenly HTML happens. But I can go back
to plain text, and then it's okay.
So that's that mystery, I think.
