Follow-up questions:
I *think* most of your questions are answered
[here](https://manual.mailmate-app.com/custom_key_bindings.html#key-bindings-in-mailmate).
You are right: when I went back I found that this did specify the
separating character. I was doing it right; I must just have forgotten
the source of this information.
2. Would it be possible to add a log entry if MailMate does not find
a file?
I've added this.
Thanks. Will this pop-up in a beta build when I update?
3. Are there any characters forbidden in filenames?
No.
Then I guess I'm still at a loss. When a keystroke fails to do what I
expect, is there any debugging recourse? Is there some sort of API that
Apple supplies to let you query a keyboard configuration with a
keystroke to find out what will happen? Is there a logging capability
that one can use to see how keystrokes were mapped in an application?
IMO that's the problem with all these domain-specific languages like the
plist -- people who build them don't just *assume* that they'll go wrong
sometime, as software always does, and think about how they can be
debugged when the inevitable happens.
Best,
