I want to exclude stuff that is in a Smart Folder from being shown in my Inbox. At the moment I don't think this is possible and am beginning to think that I should probably set up rule-based project mailboxes and add smart folders to them. It seems to me that this involves possible redundancy in setting up the rules and viewing conditions.

What I do, and I'm not sure it matches your use case exactly, is to hang a number of project- or category-specify smart mailboxes from my Inbox, and add an extra one, named "Uncategorized", and with a "not in any of those folders" condition
(which is what Robert seemed to be suggesting).

A couple of years ago, I couldn't see how to do this, mailed Benny to ask for
what I thought was a new feature, and got the advice I needed.

I hardly ever visit my Inbox itself, as this set of smart mailboxes gives me
the triage I need.
