Since the Preferences Pane is primarily for users, not developers,
wouldn't it be better to call it the 'insertion point', as Apple
recommend in their style guide? As a new user, I was confused by what
was meant by the 'caret'.

In developer materials, use caret for the blinking bar that marks the
insertion point. In user materials, the blinking bar is the insertion
point.
