Somehow MailMate misinterprets a repeated error as a possible password issue (server are not always good at telling the email client exactly what the problem is). First try updating to the latest beta of MailMate (in the Software Update preferences pane).

For what it’s worth I have experienced similar issues (on Runbox) on and off for the last couple of years (always using latest beta). MM throws a wobbly for a few minutes or an hour, but it always seems to go back to normal again after a while.
