Jim, I'm of the same ilk; in fact I still work on Solaris in my day job.
;-)
I found MailMate back around 2018, after getting so frustrated with bugs
and inconsistencies in Apple's mail client and others like Thunderbird.
MailMate easily beats then both; full-featured and incredibly
customizable. It's amazing when you realize the development "team" is a
single person! Benny has built something unmatched IMO, and is
responsive to feature requests and bug reports. Try that with Apple
Mail or Thunderbird!
My comment about alpha testing was mainly aimed at Bill, as he's running
a newer version than is available via the "hold the option key while
checking for updates" way of getting Benny's latest "blessed" test
releases. I've been running the test releases with rarely any regrets
over the years.
Now I have to go explain to _my_ wife why I just spent 45 minutes
working on a couple email filters!

All I can say is thanks for giving it a try!
I've got no prob being a tester of sorts; all I can say is HOW CAN I
HAVE MISSED this app FOR SO LONG!
I'm a long time Unix guy (Linux, Solaris, BSD from 90's+) who's lived
with mail/pine/Mutt/NeoMutt and various GUI mail clients. But NONE of
them have the features and function that this app has...
My wife asked me why I'd spent so much time on the computer over the
past couple of days and I told her that I've been "playing with
e-mail" and she didn't really believe me. But it's true, I have and I
dig it...
Whenever Contact groups gets figured out it gets figured out...
That's just a blip on the radar for me - Thanks to the development
team - I appreciate your work!

has been missing me for a few days while this conversion has kicked
in...)

Jim Bates via mailmate <mailmate@lists.freron.com>
is rumored to have said:
I have been searching, unsuccessfully, for help with the following:
I am creating a Smart Folder and would like to use **"Recipient
(To, Cc, Bcc) >> Contact >> Group"** to allow only emails from
those within the specific Apple Contacts Group.
My issue is that I can not "see" any available values in the filter
text box and all the values I have tried entering do not work.
It's not just you. That looks like a definite bug. (Present in
current test release 6268)
After reading this I thought of a couple useful smart mailboxes I
could make based on my Contacts.app groups (thanks for the idea
Jim!), so I wanted to see if it would work for me.
It was working fine initially, then all of a sudden I encountered
what you're both reporting: no contact groups were showing up in the
list anymore!
I quit and restarted MailMate and it started working again, so this
feels like some kind of intermittent issue.
This is on build 6265. I did not get offered any newer version when
I option-clicked on the "Check Now" button. That to me is what Benny
considers a test release. If you're rooting around where Benny
uploads all his builds, then I think you're going beyond test
releases and into the realm of being an alpha tester. ;-)
