I’m at a loss. There might be clues in that error…

The settings folder I referred to restoring from your backup (be sure   close 
the app first) would be everything in *~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/*

Seems you only attempted a restore of Messages folder? Maybe another opinion is 
needed on this. Ask Benny.

Personally, I have not had this situation, but have restored my settings (not 
Messages) in the past with success. There is a process for this in the MM Help 
menu and MM Manual.
