If you were limited there would normally be a defer response, or if 
blatant SPAM a reject.  An accepted message should appear somewhere, 
perhaps tagged as SPAM but in any case visible.  But the story does 
sound like some change was made at Google.  That "searching" reveals 
what isn't obvious might merely mean the user's settings are to place 
messages from contacts first which happen to be plentiful or perhaps 
tagged as SPAM with that "folder" specifically hidden.  It would be sad 
if it turns out messages were accepted then silently discarded or lost.
