The limit was chosen for performance reasons, and for that it's still valid. SPF validates envelope information, so those lookups happen even if the message will ultimately be rejected for its content. And forgeries create load on the VICTIM'S servers.
It's better for everyone if the domain administrator spends five minutes up-front to consolidate and denormalize things, rather than having every recipient of every message do it every time.
