I believe you misunderstood what I wrote: The argument I was trying to make was that there are a lot of MTAs out there that are not run by large ESPs - but by individuals, smaller or larger companys and other organizations. If those MTAs were not able to reliably communicate with mailboxes at those large ESPs, then they would have been shut down long ago. But they are still there and are being actively used by millions of users every day.
