To add to Bill's suggestion, given this happens after DATA: Check the (path) MTU. Btw, is there any hypothetical chance that your mailer might be running on a KVM/QEMU virtualized platform and might be using rtl8139 virtual NICs (no offense meant; this is a very wild guess, but from the looks of it, your org. might fit the unlikely arrangement of stars and a full moon that could lead to that.)
