So, at the risk of totally missing the point, I’ll add a different branch.
Sadly, from some experience…

1. There is a management element missing in these discussions. How does
your friend plan to maintain credentials for those using his service?
There isn’t really any in-protocol way to, for example, allow an end-user
to change their password.

2. Supporting people configuring their mail clients - documenting how to
set up Mac Mail.app/Thunderbird/Outlook, etc. Bit of work there, too.

3. Spamassassin setup? Decisions on marking or automatically (sieve?)
routing to a Junk mailbox, or even dropping - assuming you reject what you
can before spooling the message data.

4. Managing space, automating Trashes deletion, backups. Ayeee, and people
expect vacation responders. I’ll bet that is another thread that I’m not
going to pick up.

Clearly to this point there has been lots of good discussion in the weeds
(and this IS the mailop list, after all) but I’ve set up a couple of these
and found I spent a whole lot of time on, er, “details” like this.
Offering access via a web-based UI will fix some but not all of these
issues, of course, but the intended user base may need consideration at a
different level.
